John Smeaton was regarded as the father of Civil engineering. He was
born on June 8,1724, at Austhorpe in Yorkshire. He was the one who
designed the third Eddystone Lighthouse during the period of
1755-59.John Smeaton used hydraulic lime in the construction of the
lighthouse and developed a technique involving use of dovetailed blocks
of granite in the lighthouse’s building. This lighthouse was remained in
use till 1877 when the rock underlying the foundations of the structure
beginning to erode the building was been dismantled and partially
rebuilt. John Smeaton was important in the development, history,
rediscovery of modern cement, because he identified the composition and
requirements required to be obtained Liquidity or hydraulicity in lime
work which ultimately led to the invention of Modern Portland cement.
