Statistical Analysis ANOVA

 Analysis of variance (ANOVA) is a statistical method used to compare the means of three or more groups. It is commonly used in experimental research to test the effect of one or more independent variables on a dependent variable. ANOVA is an extension of the t-test, which is used to compare the means of two groups.


The ANOVA test is based on the F-statistic, which is a ratio of the variance between groups to the variance within groups. If the F-statistic is large, it indicates that the variance between groups is greater than the variance within groups, which suggests that there is a significant difference between the means of the groups. If the F-statistic is small, it indicates that the variance between groups is similar to the variance within groups, which suggests that there is no significant difference between the means of the groups.

There are three types of ANOVA: one-way ANOVA, two-way ANOVA, and repeated measures ANOVA. Each type is used in different situations, depending on the research question and design of the study.


One-way ANOVA is used when there is one independent variable with three or more levels. For example, if a researcher wants to test the effect of different dosages of a drug on blood pressure, they would use one-way ANOVA. The independent variable is the dosage of the drug, and the dependent variable is blood pressure. The null hypothesis for one-way ANOVA is that there is no difference between the means of the groups.

Two-way ANOVA is used when there are two independent variables. For example, if a researcher wants to test the effect of two different treatments (treatment A and treatment B) on blood pressure, and also wants to test the effect of gender (male and female) on blood pressure, they would use two-way ANOVA. The independent variables are treatment and gender, and the dependent variable is blood pressure. The null hypothesis for two-way ANOVA is that there is no interaction between the two independent variables.


Repeated measures ANOVA is used when the same participants are measured on the same dependent variable multiple times. For example, if a researcher wants to test the effect of different exercises on heart rate, and measures the heart rate of each participant before and after each exercise, they would use repeated measures ANOVA. The independent variable is the type of exercise, and the dependent variable is heart rate. The null hypothesis for repeated measures ANOVA is that there is no difference between the means of the groups.


To perform ANOVA, the researcher first calculates the mean and variance of each group. They then calculate the variance between groups and the variance within groups. The F-statistic is calculated by dividing the variance between groups by the variance within groups. If the F-statistic is significant (i.e., greater than the critical value), the researcher rejects the null hypothesis and concludes that there is a significant difference between the means of the groups.


There are some assumptions that must be met for ANOVA to be valid. First, the data must be normally distributed. Second, the variance within groups must be the same for all groups. Third, the observations must be independent. Violation of these assumptions can lead to inaccurate results.

Example :


A researcher wants to test the effect of three different teaching methods on student test scores. They randomly assign 30 students to one of three groups: group A receives traditional lecture-style teaching, group B receives interactive group activities, and group C receives individualized instruction. After six weeks of instruction, the researcher administers a standardized test to all students.


The null hypothesis for this study is that there is no difference in test scores between the three groups. The alternative hypothesis is that there is a difference in test scores between the three groups.


The first step is to calculate the mean and variance of each group. Here are the results:


Group A: Mean = 75, Variance = 36

Group B: Mean = 80, Variance = 16

Group C: Mean = 85, Variance = 25


Next, we calculate the total variance:


Total variance = ((30-1) x 36 + (30-1) x 16 + (30-1) x 25) / (3 x 30 - 3) = 54


Then, we calculate the variance between groups:


Variance between groups = ((75-80.33)^2 x 30 + (80-80.33)^2 x 30 + (85-80.33)^2 x 30) / 2 = 92.45


And we calculate the variance within groups:


Variance within groups = (36 x 29 + 16 x 29 + 25 x 29) / (3 x 30 - 3) = 33.66


Finally, we calculate the F-statistic:


F = Variance between groups / Variance within groups = 2.75


We then look up the critical value for F with 2 and 87 degrees of freedom (df between = k - 1 = 2, df within = n - k = 87), using a significance level of 0.05. The critical value is 3.08.


Since the calculated F-statistic of 2.75 is less than the critical value of 3.08, we fail to reject the null hypothesis. This means that there is not enough evidence to conclude that there is a difference in test scores between the three groups.


In other words, the researcher cannot conclude that one teaching method is better than the others based on this study. However, it's worth noting that this study has some limitations, such as the small sample size and the short duration of instruction. Further research with larger sample sizes and longer instruction periods may reveal more meaningful results.
